Change a YubiKey PIN

Create/Change a YubiKey PIN in Windows

The steps below are for Windows 11, but the process should be identical on Windows 10.

  1. If it's not already plugged in, plug your YubiKey into a USB port on your computer
  2. Open the Windows Settings app by clicking the Start button in the bottom-left corner and then click the gear icon or search for "Settings" in the search field. If you cannot find the Settings app, check this page for assistance locating it.
  3. In the left menu, click Accounts.
  4. Under the Account settings section, click Sign-in options.
  5. Under the Ways to sign in section, click Security key then click the Manage button.
  6. You will be prompted to Touch your security key, touch the gold button on the YubiKey.
  7. Under the Security Key PIN section, click the Change button.
  8. You'll need to know the current PIN to change it. If you do not know the current PIN, please contact Horizon Information Systems. If you do know the current PIN:
    1. Enter the current PIN in the first field labelled Security key PIN.
    2. Enter and confirm a new PIN in the next two fields. The PIN must be between 4-63 alphanumeric characters (numbers and/or letters).
    3. Click the OK button.
  9. If the change is successful, you'll be returned to the Windows Hello setup window with the Security Key PIN and Reset Security Key options. You can click the Close button now that you've set a new PIN on your YubiKey.
